Boone is a ski town? Where is the slope? Well, there almost was a pioneering ski slope on Howard's Knob, the huge mountain that towers over the town.
But slope or not, there is no denying Boone is the heart of the High Country in all seasons. Boone offers the greatest variety in shopping, dining, lodging and cabin rentals & Boone vacation rentals in the region. The town is also the service center of the High Country. If your money runs lows, there are branches of many major banks. If you have car problems, there are dealerships and other service centers. And if you need them, there are the finest in healthcare services available at Watauga Medical Center.
The downtown is called Olde Boone. Visitors there will find an intriguing blend of restaurants, shops, and boutiques, side-by-side with legal offices and residences. You'll find the Jones House here, a center of cultural activity in the community. This lovely Queen Anne-style house dates back to 1910. Once the home of a prominent local physician, the Jones House is now home to an art gallery and hosts many events.
Boone is such a popular destination, there are times it gets congested. Traffic can be heavy, especially around the traditional rush hours of 8 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. There is another option to your car: park and ride AppalCART, our local mass transit system. Routes cover the Boone area, and AppalCART offers routes to several ski slopes during the season.
Little remains to remind people of distant days. The simple homes and shacks that once lined King Street have given way to attractive buildings that preserve the charm of the first three decades of this century. All that is in contrast to the modern city that has grown up around this core.
With so much to do and enjoy, we think Boone is a magnet that will draw you back again and again.
