Often called the most beautiful natural canyon in the Eastern United States, Hickory Nut Gorge offers startlingly spectacular scenery. Along the floor of the Gorge flows the Rocky Broad River - credited with having patiently carved the granite of the Blue Ridge Mountains to form the deep cut. On either side, rocky cliffs rise steeply, dwarfing the little villages below.
In all, the Gorge is about 14 miles long, and the road that twists and turns with the river extends from Gerton through Bat Cave and Chimney Rock to the crystal waters of Lake Lure. All along the way are countless opportunities for relaxation and enjoyment.
First, of course, is the boundless beauty of Nature...and there's so much more! Fishing, hiking, water sports, music, dancing, good food, golf, tennis mountain crafts, quaint shops filled with antiques and gifts, cider stands, fresh fruits and vegetables and homemade jams.
And, there is hospitality - warm and inviting. Caring for travelers has been the chief industry in the Gorge since the pioneers first used this route into the highlands. Later, in the 1800's, lovely country inns provided welcome respite for road-weary stagecoach passengers. There are still country inns and bed and breakfast lodges in Hickory Nut Gorge, and also excellent campgrounds, modern motels and cottages to rent.
Many who come establish permanent part-time or year-round homes in lakeside or mountainside houses or condominiums. Here they enjoy many opportunities for social, cultural and religious involvement.
We look forward to welcoming you to our gorge. But be careful, once you get here, you may find it hard to leave!
